Ancient China: Battle Of Red Cliffs - Ducksters
In the winter of AD 208, Cao Cao marched his Wei army of 800,000 south to invade the Yangtze River, owned by Liu Bei and Sun Quan of the Shu and Wu, whom had forged a temporary alliance. In the previous year of 207 AD, Cao Cao had completed his successful campaign of establishing absolute authority over the North China Plain, making him the most powerful man on the continent. Capturing the Yangtze river would have been a strategic gateway to invading the South. At the time, Cao Cao’s army was overwhelmingly large compared to the 50,000 defenders from the Shu and Wu factions. However, the massive army was disorganized and many troops were impressed from previously defeated factions. Furthermore, Cao Cao’s northern troops were accustomed to fighting on plains with cavalry tactics and lacked any experience in naval and marine warfare. On the contrary, the southern defenders were naval veterans accustomed to fighting on the water.
Because Cao Cao’s army was unaccustomed to the environment, many of his troops either became seasick or contracted diseases native to the region. In order to reduce the seasickness, Cao Cao chained his ships together from stern to stern. After discovering this, Zhou Yu, the chief strategist in the Wu military devised an ingenious tactic that would completely shift the balance of power in the war. The scheme was carried out flawlessly by sending in fire ships in the fog at a location on the river called Red Cliff. As the fire ships approached the Wei navy, they were lit ablaze to send crashing into their oblivious adversaries. Because Cao Cao’s ships were all chained together, the fire spread rapidly across the Wei navy, decimating his enormous army. The Shu and Wu armies pursued Cao Cao out of the southern region.

The Battle of Red Cliff is just one of many tactical battles that happened throughout the war. It shows that the importance of military genius far exceeds sheer numbers. Zhou Yu’s strategy enabled the alliance’s far-outnumbered army to prevail against its foes. It was very interesting to look into this subject and I am looking forward to further exploring the Three Kingdoms era for my research project.
